This week's WW was brought to you by the ubiquitous <a> tag. Where would we be without it? It ties everything on the web together, so we thought that giving it a bit of attention is certainly warranted.

Design for Touch Devices

So, do you still design for the mouse hover state? Hover menus, mouseover images, you name it? Well, you might want to reconsider. Our consensus is that with touch devices being all the rage, it's best to design for touch/click rather than hover. Most mobile devices will treat a hover as a touch, so dropdown menus that are triggered on mouse hover tend to work kinda okay, but we have seen issues.

One good rule of thumb is to provide multiple means of getting to an individual page. If you're using dropdown menus, also include links to related pages in the sidebar or the footer. Don't let the menus be the only way to get around the site.

Testing on Windows 8?

Now that Windows 8 has launched, we now have another platform to test on. We're assuming that IE9 on Windows 7 is going to work pretty closely to IE10 on Windows 8, but that remains to be seen. You might want to consider using Adobe's Browser Lab (free) or BrowserStack (paid) for your cross-browser testing.

See you next time!
